KAPILVASTU, Aug 20: The Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal (JSP-N) staged a protest in Taulihawa, Kapilvastu, against the Supreme Court (SC)’s mandamus order for an investigation into the 19-year-old Gaur massacre case. Party cadres demonstrated in front of the District Administration Office and the Government Attorney’s Office, calling the order biased.

On Monday, a joint bench of justices Til Prasad Shrestha and Nityananda Pandey directed the Rautahat District Police Office to investigate complaints filed against JSP Nepal Chairman Upendra Yadav and others. The case stems from the  March 21, 2007 incident in Gaur, Rautahat, where 27 Maoist cadres were killed in clashes between the then Madhesi People’s Rights Forum and the then CPN-Maoist at a rice mill venue.

During Tuesday’s protest, JSP-N cadres chanted slogans against the prime minister, government, UML, Nepali Congress, and also questioned the judiciary’s integrity.

JSP Kapilvastu Chairman Shailendra Kumar Yadav said the probe was politically motivated and launched in retaliation against the party’s opposition to the land ordinance. He claimed the incident was a political event involving spontaneous participation of Madhesi people, but was being presented as an act of revenge.

Central leaders Abdul Rasid Khan, Sudip Paudel (Mayor of Kapilvastu Municipality), and Sadhika Yadav, among others, also joined the protest.
