KATHMANDU, Aug 10: The annual Gaijatra festival is being celebrated in Kathmandu today with traditional rituals and vibrant processions. The festival, observed mainly by the Newar community, is held to honor the deceased and to help their souls cross the mythical river Vaitarani.
As part of the celebration, cows are paraded around the city, as cows are believed to guide departed souls on their journey. In Basantapur and Hanuman Dhoka areas, the festival drew large crowds, with families participating in the procession. Children dressed as cows and other traditional characters joined the parade, adding color and joy to the occasion.
