ILAM, Sept 18: Ravi Laxmi Chitrakar, wife of former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal, who was seriously injured in a house fire during the Gen Z protests on September 9, has had her left hand amputated due to severe burns, officials said.
Doctors decided to surgically remove her hand after the burns threatened further damage to her body, Khanal told Republica.
According to Khanal, the 70-year-old Chitrakar is in critical condition and is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Burn Hospital in Kirtipur. “Doctors have informed us that 17 percent of her body is burned,” Khanal said on Thursday afternoon. “Her condition is serious, and pneumonia has developed today.”

Khanal added that doctors are continuing treatment at the same hospital and she has not been transferred elsewhere. “She is in ICU, unable to speak, but she is conscious. It seems she is trying to communicate, but her speech is not understandable,” he said.
During the Gen Z protests on September 9, Khanal’s house in Dallu, Kathmandu, was set on fire. Chitrakar sustained severe burn injuries in the incident and has been under treatment since then.
Khanal said doctors have not yet estimated how long her treatment will continue and have not recommended transferring her to another facility.
