KATHMANDU, Sept 21: KT Rama Rao, executive president of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi and former minister of Telangana, has cautioned that if the Indian government fails to meet public aspirations, the country could witness protests similar to Nepal’s recent Gen-Z movement.
Speaking at the NDTV Youth Conclave on Saturday, Rao recalled how initial demonstrations in Nepal were mocked but later forced the fall of then-Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s government.

“What happened in Nepal was nothing but the suppression of democracy and the voice of Gen-Z. At first, when they protested, even the media mocked them, saying they were only against an internet shutdown. But they were actually fighting for their future,” Rao said.
When asked whether such protests could erupt in India, he responded, “If the government continues to fail to meet the people’s aspirations, why not? It can happen.” However, when the same question was posed to the largely youth audience, many disagreed, saying such protests would not happen in India.
Replying to them, Rao said only time would tell, emphasizing that social media now allows politicians to face unfiltered reactions from citizens. He predicted that politics in the next decade would undergo a significant transformation.
