Energy Minister ousts DG during hydropower license review

The replacement came while proposal evaluations were ongoing for licenses of projects including the 40.8 MW Sankhuwakhola-1, 47 MW Dudhkoshi-4, and 30.2 MW Lower Hongu, among a total of six projects.

KATHMANDU, Aug 9: Energy Minister Deepak Khadka has replaced the Director General of the Department of Electricity Development (DED) at a time when the licensing process for six hydropower projects is underway.



The replacement came while proposal evaluations were ongoing for licenses of projects including the 40.8 MW Sankhuwakhola-1, 47 MW Dudhkoshi-4, and 30.2 MW Lower Hongu, among a total of six projects.

The DED had issued a notice on May 9 inviting bids for licenses for eight hydropower projects. Sixteen companies submitted applications for six of them.


Minister Khadka transferred Director General Nabin Raj Singh to the ministry and appointed Jivach Mandal, CEO of the Budhigandaki reservoir-based hydropower project, in his place. Singh had been appointed Director General on August 3 last year.
