According to Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market Development Board, the arrivals of vegetables in Kalimati Market -- the largest vegetable market of the country -- dropped to 318 tons on Wednesday from 418 tons on Monday.
Binaya Shrestha, planning officer at the board, said the inflow of vegetables in the market has been affected due to lower quantity of vegetables being collected from farms as Dashain fever has gripped the farmers. According to Shrestha, arrivals have dropped by 20 to 25 percent as compared to normal time when arrivals of vegetables stand at around 500 tons per day.
Shrestha said dipping volume of supplies from farms has pushed up the prices of vegetables such as tomato and onion which are highly used during festive seasons.
He said prices of big tomato and small tomato have gone up by at least Rs 8-10 per kg in a single day to reach Rs 36 and Rs 45 per kg respectively on Thursday. Price of local cauliflower also rose by Rs 8 per kg to 55 per kg on Thursday. Green chilly also became dearer by Rs 6 to Rs 56 per kg.
The prices of big tomato, small tomato and local cauliflower, however, are lower than the prices recorded a month ago. Price of big tomato, small tomato and cauliflower were selling for Rs 55, Rs 60 and Rs 55 per kg at that time. Prices of cabbage and cucumber plunged to Rs 28 per kg each from Rs 40 and Rs 50 per kg respectively over the month.
The prices of apple and banana declined to Rs 130 per kg and Rs 50 per dozen from Rs 95 per kg and 40 per dozen respectively. However, prices of red potato and white potato increased marginally to Rs 42 and Rs 38 per kg from Rs 40 and Rs 36 per kg respectively.
