If you are still single in Denmark, your friends have a special way of reminding you of your singlehood on your birthday. They bring you out into the streets, give you goggles to cover your eyes and start smothering you with cinnamon powder. While single people at the age of 25 get covered in cinnamon, the spice gets upgraded to pepper at the age of 30. The level of spice only increases with age. This tradition dates back to the time when spice salesmen would mostly remain single because of their constant need for travelling; the salesmen would never be in the same place for a long time to get acquainted with someone and settle.
