CHITWAN, July 21: The number of prisoners, who entered Chitwan Prison in the last Fiscal Year (FY), exceeded the number of those released, according to the prison office.
Chetanath Dhungana, the prison’s information officer, said that a total of 808 new inmates were added during the last FY, while only 672 were released. Among those added, 150 were from Nawalparasi (Bardaghat–Susta East) and the rest were from Chitwan.
Overcrowded prison making life difficult for inmates

During the same period, 145 inmates were transferred from Chitwan to other prisons, and six were admitted from other prisons for medical treatment.
Forty-two inmates were granted parole last year. This facility is available to prisoners who are sentenced to more than one year and have served two-thirds of their sentence.
Two inmates died in prison last year due to cancer, according to Dhungana.
Currently, there are 730 inmates in Chitwan Prison, including 684 men and 46 women. Five dependent children are also staying with their mothers. The prison has a capacity of 470 male and 35 female inmates.
