CHITWAN, Aug 25: Health authorities in Chitwan have urged residents to exercise caution as the district faces a heightened risk of cholera outbreak.
The District Public Health Office, Chitwan, issued a notice on Monday warning that frequent movement of people between Chitwan and Parsa, including patients seeking medical care, could accelerate the spread of infection. Office chief Dinesh Rupakheti said the situation demands extra vigilance.

Birgunj, located in neighboring Parsa district, is already grappling with a cholera outbreak. The disease has claimed two lives there, while hundreds have fallen ill. With the outbreak spreading at the community level, Birgunj Metropolitan City has ordered all educational institutions to remain closed for two days.
Health officials in Chitwan have advised residents to adopt preventive measures, especially during the hot season when the disease spreads rapidly through contaminated water, poor sanitation, and unhygienic food practices.
The notice emphasized drinking only boiled or filtered water, eating properly cooked meals, covering and reheating leftover food before consumption and washing hands thoroughly with soap before eating. Residents were also urged to avoid open defecation and refrain from consuming food sold openly on roadsides.
Cholera typically spreads through contaminated food and water. Symptoms include sudden and frequent watery diarrhea, vomiting, weakness, and muscle cramps in the legs. Authorities have urged anyone experiencing such symptoms to contact the nearest health facility or medical worker immediately.
