KATHMANDU, July 31 : The price of chicken meat has increased to Rs 335 per kilogram, even as consumption typically declines during the month of Shrawan.

According to the National Poultry Traders Association, the price of live chicken has been raised by Rs 10 per kilogram, reaching Rs 240. Previously, it was Rs 230 per kilogram.

Similarly, the retail price of processed chicken meat has gone up from Rs 320 to Rs 335 per kilogram.

Shrawan (mid-July to mid-August) is traditionally a month when meat and fish consumption drops by around 30 percent. However, the association says the rise in price is due to reduced production rather than high demand.

According to the traders’ association, supply has fallen short because hatcheries had halted chick production for a week last month. The suspension was in response to oversupply in the market at that time, which is now affecting current availability.

Despite lower demand, the existing production is not enough to meet market needs, leading to the price hike, he added.
