PARSA, Aug 1: In response to the growing drinking water shortage in Birgunj Metropolitan City (BMC), officials from the BMC and the President of the Chure–Tarai Madhes Conservation Development Committee(CTMCDC) have carried out a field inspection in the Bhawar region of Amlekhgunj, Bara.
Amlekhgunj currently supplies around 2.4 million liters of drinking water daily using a technology that stores subsurface water. The inspection team explored the possibility of replicating this model in Birgunj to address the deepening water crisis.

Mayor Rajeshman Singh emphasized the need to harvest surface runoff and artificially recharge groundwater to address the declining water table in the city. “We can apply the Amlekhgunj method to recharge underground water and ensure a sustainable supply,” he said.
The team also visited potential sites in Belbas and the Bhedaha stream in Ward 31 of Birgunj for further feasibility assessment. CTMCDC Chairperson Dr. Kiran Paudel and Engineer Anil Sinha stressed that building ponds, tanks and similar structures could offer a long-term solution to groundwater depletion.
Jay Prakash Khetan of the Green City Community Service Center stated that efforts are now intensifying to explore sustainable alternatives to solve Birgunj’s drinking water scarcity.
