Bagmati Municipality Mayor Thapa slapped 8-year jail and cash penalty of Rs 100 million

The Special Court on Thursday sentenced Mayor of Bagmati Municipality (BM) in Sarlahi, Bharat Thapa, to eight years in prison.

KATHMANDU, Aug 14: The Special Court on Thursday sentenced Mayor of Bagmati Municipality (BM) in Sarlahi, Bharat Thapa, to eight years in prison.



Thapa, along with BM’s Officer Bimal Kumar Pokharel and Chief of Planning Department Sagar Poudel have been charged in the case of embezzling river resources. Pokharel and Poudel duos have also been slapped with imprisonment for similar periods.

The joint bench of Special Court Chairperson Justice Tek Narayan Kunwar and member Justices Murari Babu Shrestha and Bidur Koirala on August 6 issued verdict against the accused, however it declared the penalty amount only on Thursday.


The court also slapped each of the guilty with a cash fine of more than Rs 100.97 million. Likewise, the court also issued a verdict to recover and deposit Rs 4.03 million in the Victims' Relief Fund.


The offenders were found guilty of embezzling over Rs 302.93 worth in extraction of river resources.


Deputy Mayor Leela Kumari Moktan, the then Account Officer Bishwaraj Pokharel, and the then head of the District Coordination Committee, Methur Chaudhary, have been acquitted in the case.
