KATHMANDU, July 13: Resham Chaudhary, the patron of the Nagarik Unmukti Party (NUP), has expressed disappointment that his repeated calls for unity among identity-based (primarily Madhesh-centric) parties are going unheard. Indirectly referring to his wife, Ranjita Shrestha, who is also the chairperson of his party, he suggested he has not received support even from her.
“I’m not someone who opens parties or jumps between parties. I care about the issues. That’s all I’m devoted to. What’s the point of having names like Upendra Yadav, Resham Chaudhary, Rajendra Mahato, Mahantha Thakur, and Chandra Kant Raut? The languages and speeches are the same, the manifestos are the same, the statutes are the same, the issues are the same—even our pain is the same. But why can’t we unite?” he said, addressing the National Gathering of Dalits, marginalized communities, Tharus, indigenous peoples, and minorities in Kathmandu on Saturday.

Without taking names, Chaudhary hinted at his wife, saying, “All day I talk about unity. I keep asking everyone to come together. But in the evening, even my door is slammed shut. My pain stays with me. Those who understand, understand—for those who don’t, I have nothing more to say.”
He added that he never intended to become a political leader. If the cause were united and dignity restored in the country, he would be content to live a peaceful life, singing songs or teaching in colleges.
