705 inmates recaptured after mass escape from Jhumka Prison

SUNSARI, Sept 16: Police have recaptured 705 inmates who escaped from Jhumka Prison in Ramdhuni Municipality-5, Sunsari, following the recent “Gen Z” demonstrations.



According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Suman Kumar Timsina, chief of the Sunsari District Police Office, a total of 1,572 prisoners fled during the unrest triggered by protests on September 8 and 9. The breakout occurred on the night of September 9, when more than 100 demonstrators entered the prison compound and began causing damage.

SP Timsina said prison officials loosened security at the main gate to prevent further harm after inmates threatened to set fires, and outside protesters applied pressure. Of the two prison blocks, 1,572 prisoners escaped while 227 remained inside.


Among those held at Jhumka were 65 foreign nationals, including Indians. Timsina confirmed that all the Indian prisoners escaped. Search operations are ongoing to locate the remaining fugitives.
