KATHMANDU, May 28: Authorities will deploy 3,000 police across Kathmandu Valley to maintain security during the Republic Day celebrations tomorrow and the pro-monarchist protest announced for the same day. The deployment includes officers from district police offices, battalions, and various police posts, all placed on high alert to ensure peace and order.

As the ruling CPN-UML prepares to celebrate Republic Day, pro-monarchist groups including the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) have announced a "people's movement" program for the same day. Authorities have devised a security strategy accordingly.

Security forces will be deployed early in the morning to manage the formal ceremony at the Army Pavilion in Tundikhel, which will host the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, heads of constitutional bodies, and other high-ranking officials. After the ceremony concludes, Nepal Police will shift their focus to intensified security deployments for the rest of the day.

The federal parliament will convene a joint session in the afternoon to present the budget speech for fiscal year 2025/26.

To prepare for all these events, Nepal Police have placed 3,000 personnel on standby across the Kathmandu Valley. Central Police Spokesperson SSP Ramesh Thapa said the District Security Committee will finalize the deployment plan by this evening, deciding how many personnel to assign and where to station them.

Given the presence of high-profile individuals, authorities have prioritized security at the Republic Day ceremony in Tundikhel and the budget speech at the Parliament Building (International Convention Center) in New Baneshwor. Police have already designated these two locations as high-security zones, SSP Thapa said.

He added that police remain equally vigilant for programs organized by various political parties. However, since the District Security Committee is responsible for formulating security plans for those events, the police have not finalized deployment details yet.

"We will not tolerate any anarchic activity," SSP Thapa said. "We have placed all necessary resources and personnel on standby to handle any situation."

The District Security Committee has granted the CPN-UML permission to celebrate Republic Day at the Bhrikutimandap area. However, it has not yet approved a location for the protest announced by the Rastriya Prajatantra Party. Police will finalize additional deployment plans once the committee decides on the protest site, Thapa added.

Police units from all three districts of Kathmandu Valley, including the district police offices, four types of battalions, and various police posts, are on standby for tomorrow's protest. These units total 3,000 personnel.

SP Apilraj Bohara, spokesperson for the Kathmandu District Police Office, said authorities have so far finalized only the transportation plan to escort the President from Sheetal Niwas to Tundikhel. The District Security Committee will decide the remaining plans after its upcoming meeting.
