KAPILVASTU, Sept 24: Ten people were injured, one critically, when a bus overturned early Wednesday morning at around 5:30 AM at Umari Chowk, Shivaraj Municipality–1, Kapilvastu, on the East-West Highway. The bus, bearing registration number Ga 1 Kha 9700, was traveling from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj when it lost control and collided with an electric pole before overturning.

According to the Ward Police Office, Chandrauta, 50-year-old Radhika Sharma from Khatyad Rural Municipality–7 in Mugu sustained serious injuries and was transferred to Butwal for further treatment. Other injured passengers include her son, 21-year-old Bikas Sharma; 27-year-old Shivaraj Adhikari from Achham Kamalbazar Municipality–5; and 26-year-old Bibek Khatri from Baikunth Rural Municipality–1, Banke. Additionally, 64-year-old Punya Nidhi Ghimire from Mahepal, Lamjung; Durga Devi Adhikari; Tilak Khadka from Dullu Municipality–6, Dailekh; Sita Acharya from Rajkot Municipality, Kalikot; Bijay Ranabhat from Lekhnath Municipality, Kaski; and Madan Thapa from Bheri Municipality–3, Jajarkot, were also injured.
Nine passengers with minor injuries were treated at Chandrauta and later sent home. The bus and its driver are under police custody, said Inspector Sujan Bikram Shah of Chandrauta Ward Police Office. The accident reportedly occurred when the bus driver applied brakes suddenly to avoid an oncoming truck, causing the bus to hit a pole and overturn.
