NHRC member Surya Dhungel resigns, backs PM Karki’s historic leadership

KATHMANDU, Sept 13: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) member Surya Dhungel has announced his resignation, expressing support for the newly formed government under Prime Minister Sushila Karki.



In his resignation letter addressed to NHRC Chair, Dhungel said he would formally submit his resignation to President Ramchandra Paudel through the Commission as per constitutional provisions. He noted that his decision was motivated by a desire to allow a more "competent, deserving, qualified and energetic person fully committed to human rights" to take the position.

Dhungel welcomed the appointment of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as Nepal’s first woman prime minister, calling it a historic moment for both the nation and the world. “Karki has created history as the only figure globally to have served as both the first woman Chief Justice and the first woman Prime Minister,” he wrote, adding that he believes her government will be able to restore peace, rule of law, human rights, and constitutional order in the country.


The outgoing commissioner also thanked his colleagues, fellow commissioners, NHRC staff, and the broader human rights community for their support during his tenure. “My stay with NHRC has been very productive and full of memory that will remain in my heart forever,” he said, while offering apologies for any shortcomings during his service.


Dhungel expressed confidence that the Commission would continue to advance Nepal’s human rights mission “even at the worst situation.
