KATHMANDU, Aug 12: The general conventions of the major sister organizations of the Nepali Congress (NC) are still uncertain. Although the mother party has repeatedly extended the terms of bodies such as the Nepal Student Union (NSU), Nepal Tarun Dal, Nepal Women’s Association, and Nepal Dalit Association, the conventions have yet to take place.

To conduct the overdue conventions, the party formed a directive committee, but it has not been able to prepare a clear plan or policy. On Monday, as per the decision and directive of the party’s central committee, a discussion was held with party office-bearers, the directive committee, and the presidents of the organizations.

However, the party and committee have not reached a concrete decision regarding the conventions. On 11 December, the NC central committee formed directive committees, including party leaders, with a mandate to complete the conventions of all sister organizations by mid-April 2025.

Accordingly, central directive committees were formed under the leadership of Mahalaxmi Upadhyaya (Tarun Dal), Jeevan Pariyar (Dalit Association), Kishor Singh Rathor (NSU), Prakash Sharan Mahat (Women’s Association), Ramesh Rijal (Farmers’ Association), NP Saud (Ex-Army’s Association), Mohan Bahadur Basnet (Democratic Sports Association), Madhu Acharya (Disability Association), Udaya Shamsher Rana (Tharu Association), and Govinda Pokharel (Democratic Fighters’ Association). Despite their efforts, these committees have not succeeded in holding the conventions.

As a result, the NSU has not held a convention since 2073 BS, Nepal Tarun Dal since 2072 BS, Nepal Women’s Association since 2073 BS, and Nepal Dalit Association since 2069 BS. Similarly, the Nepal Farmers’ Federation, formed in 2064 BS, has yet to hold its first convention.

The Nepal Tharu Association and Nepal Democratic Sports Association have also never held a general convention since their establishment. The NC has 13 sister organizations, 26 well-wishers’ associations, and 37 overseas contact committees. Not only the sister organizations, but even the party’s 15th general convention committee remains uncertain due to factional disputes.
