KATHMANDU, Sep 12: The police administration, which suffered heavy damage during the September 9 violence, is gradually resuming operations across the Kathmandu Valley.

According to Kathmandu Valley Police Office, vandalized police stations, beats, and units that were torched are slowly coming back into operation. Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel have also reappeared on the streets and around police posts inside the Valley.

Dozens of police stations across the Valley were vandalized and damaged, though the exact number has yet to be confirmed. “Exact data on such incidents is not yet available as many old records were destroyed,” said SSP Shekhar Khanal, spokesperson of the Kathmandu Valley Police Office at Ranipokhari.

Khanal added that police personnel are returning to their posts and resuming work with whatever facilities are available. Local residents and volunteers have also started helping to rebuild the vandalized police stations in several areas of the Valley.

Many community leaders have appealed to the public to assist in cleaning and repairing the damaged police stations.

After facing attacks from protesters, many police personnel had sought refuge inside army barracks. The Nepali Army subsequently took over responsibility for national security to bring the situation under control.
