KATHMANDU, July 15: The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police has launched a probe into suspected human trafficking after unrelated individuals were allegedly sent to a United Nations conference held in Spain.

The conference, titled Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, took place in Seville from June 30 to July 2, with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli attending it. Allegations have surfaced that unrelated individuals, some recommended by NGOs, were included in the delegation and have not returned to Nepal.

In response, CIB has formed a six-member investigation team led by SSP Hobindra Bogati. SP Rugam Kunwar from the Human Trafficking Bureau is also part of the team.

“This issue has been brought to our attention, and we have assigned the team to look into it,” said AIG Chandra Kuber Khapung, chief of CIB. “Naturally, this falls under the Bureau’s area of concern.”

Amid growing concerns, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak convened a meeting with top security officials, including IGP Deepak Thapa, CIB chief Khapung, and Department of Immigration Director General Govinda Rijal, where the need for a police-led investigation was agreed upon.

Following the meeting, CIB officially launched its inquiry into the incident.
