KATHMANDU, July 10: The government has decided to appeal the High Court’s verdict acquitting former Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Mohammad Aftab Alam in a murder case.

Attorney General Ramesh Badal signed the decision on Wednesday to challenge the ruling issued by the Birgunj bench of the Janakpur High Court.

Officials said a draft of the appeal is being prepared and will be filed at the Supreme Court within a few days.

The Office of the Attorney General typically seeks a review at the apex court when a higher court ruling contradicts the prosecution’s position. In Alam’s case, where concerns have been raised over serious procedural lapses and inadequate evaluation of evidence, an appeal was widely anticipated.
