KATHMANDU, Aug 26: Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has said that the Teej festival serves as an occasion to raise voices for gender equality and women’s empowerment.
Extending best wishes to all Nepali women on the occasion through a social media message on Monday, she expressed hope that the festival would inspire efforts to end discrimination and foster a more equitable society.
“Teej is a living tradition that reflects our lifestyle, culture, and values of tolerance. On this day, married women observe fasting, wishing for the longevity and good health of their spouses,” she noted.
According to her, the reunion of married daughters with their parental families and childhood friends during Teej strengthens social bonds and family ties.
Bhandari also urged celebrants to practice simplicity and preserve the essence of the festival by protecting its religious and cultural values.
