KATHMANDU, May 29: Home Ministry has recommended promotion of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ganesh Bahadur Thada Magar to the position of Additional Inspector General (AIG) in the Armed Police Force—bypassing the officer at the top of the seniority list.

DIG Kamal Giri, who ranked first in seniority and was widely expected to be next in line, was overlooked without explanation. Instead, Thada Magar, who was second in seniority, secured the promotion.

Insiders in the APF say Thada Magar is known for his political manoeuvring—both within the organisation and in his reported connections with political party leaders outside the force. His promotion has raised eyebrows, with many viewing it as a politically influenced decision.

The promotion recommendation was made during a meeting of the promotion committee held on Thursday. The official notice, bearing the signature of APF Inspector General Raju Aryal, has added to the controversy. IG Aryal has publicly upheld his commitment to rules and procedures, but his endorsement of this promotion has drawn criticism from within the ranks.

The decision has once again brought to light long-standing concerns about transparency and politicisation in security force appointments.
