KATHMANDU, April 4: Kathmandu Metropolitan City has required pet sellers and distributors to implant microchips in dogs and cats before sale. On Wednesday, the metropolis published a notice in Gorkhapatra, instructing pet owners to register their microchipped animals at the ward office.
Nuranidhi Neupane, head of the Agriculture and Livestock Department of the metropolis, stated that they issued the notice to facilitate the registration of domestic animals.
After implanting a microchip in a dog or cat's neck, an electronic device can read it. The chip allows authorities to access details about the pet’s owner, age, and health condition.
“People frequently abandon their pets on the streets. However, they must treat pets as family members and provide proper care. This is why we are making microchip implantation mandatory,” Neupane said.
The metropolitan city believes that implanting microchips will help prevent the theft or loss of dogs and cats.
