KATHMANDU, June 2: Indian chess world champion D Gukesh stunned Norway’s Magnus Carlsen in the sixth round of Norway Chess 2025.

Gukesh claimed his first-ever win over Carlsen in classical chess. With 8.5 points, the 19-year-old now holds third place, while Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana lead the standings with 9.5 points each. After the defeat, Carlsen reportedly punched the chessboard in frustration and walked away without speaking to the media.

In the first round, Carlsen had defeated Gukesh and dismissed his gameplay, saying, “I won’t play in the World Championship. There’s no one there who can beat me.” The match took place in Stavanger, Norway. Gukesh later responded, “If I get the chance, I’ll challenge him on the chessboard.”

Last December, Gukesh defeated Ding Liren 7.5–6.5 in the World Championship final held in Singapore and clinched the world title. At 18, he became the youngest player ever to achieve this feat.
